Sinkinisis is curated by Maria Christara and co-organized by the “Anemomyli” Traditional Folk Dance Society of Mykonos. Maria is keen to set Sinkinisis apart from other festivals of its kind. Instead of a dry, one-sided approach to tradition, she aims to highlight the vibrant, communal nature of folk dances and their deep-rooted relationship to music and singing. The festival’s name translates as “moving together” but also alludes to being moved: shared motion and shared emotion. Inspired by Maria’s Cretan descent, I looked into various kinds of folk imagery from that island and came across an embroidery that hints at movement without being overtly dance-themed. Isolated details from that piece formed the basis for the whole composition. The striking yellow background and the mysterious, intriguing figure from the embroidery make for a poster that stands out from the visuals commonly used for tradition-based events.
