Popi Zora was a Greek folklorist, archaeologist and author who played a pivotal role in preserving and reevaluating the country’s traditional art. In celebration of her life and work, the Benaki Folk Art Museum organized the Folk Art: New Findings – New Interpretations Conference in November 2006.
Commissioned to design all print material (including the booklet, Conference ID cards, and poster), I turned to the richness and beauty of Greek folk art – more specifically to the Museum’s collection which Popi Zora helped develop. It did not disappoint!
I aimed to create an easy-on-the-eye, easy-to-use booklet. The cover was based on a traditional embroidery, featuring depictions of birds, trees and flowers against a beige backdrop. Inside, the pages used the same light colour. The info was concise but clear, the visuals simple and familiar. A detail derived from the same embroidery –a star-shaped flower– formed the central image of the Conference’s poster. Folk art brought up-to-date and with a pop twist.
