Held in 2012, at the Benaki Museum, and curated by Maria Sardi, Lux in Tenebris was an Interdisciplinary Symposium celebrating the art and science behind artificial lighting from antiquity to the present day. I was in charge of the poster as well as the editorial design of the program booklet. Maria Sardi, who holds a Ph.D. in the History of Islamic Art, suggested the idea of the universally familiar oil lamp for the poster and booklet cover – an artifact that was invented in ancient times but is still in use today. As I do with all my design projects, editorial and otherwise, I aimed to convey all visual and textual information in an interesting and clear manner based on this age-old image. The selected lamp –archaic yet not out of place with today’s aesthetic—takes center stage. The various shades of blue used on the poster and booklet signify light-in-darkness itself, that elusive texture between tenebrosity and brightness.
